About this conversion
SAMI (.smi) is an old Microsoft caption format you still find on older media and many Korean and Japanese releases. Most players have dropped SAMI support, so converting to SRT makes the subtitles usable again. We read each `<SYNC Start=…>` cue, strip the HTML-style markup, skip the blank clearing syncs — and because SAMI files are frequently Shift-JIS or EUC-KR, the encoding is detected so CJK text isn't mangled.
